Description
The metal work on this beautiful custom rifle was done by Kess Arms of Milwaukee, WI probably in the 1950’s. The Remington 722 action has been modified with a Tang “shotgun style” safety and the bottom metal has been modified with a trigger guard release. The bolt handle has 2 panel tear drop checkering. All very well executed. The action is topped with a 6X Stith rifle scope in Tilden Manufacturing Co of Denver CO mount and rings. The Barrel is 24 inches long (no manufacture indicated) with a heavy sporter taper. Rifle as seen weights 9lbs 6oz.
The stock was made by Keith Steagall of Gunnison CO and so marked in the barrel channel. It exhibits very well cut fleur-de-lis checkering with a stippled border, and a beautifully shaped cheek-piece, all Steagall trademarks. The stock is well figured walnut with fiddleback throughout and a contracting fore end tip. A Neidner-style checkered butt plate and grip cap are fitted.
Metal condition is 98% with slight discoloration of the bluing at the front guard screw and slight wear at the muzzle. Wood condition is also 98% with what appear to be a couple of minor rack marks. Inletting is very tight.
